Artist statement :

Gabrielle Bejani is a French-born, Lebanese artist currently based in London. Bejani’s work sits at the intersection of drawing and painting; her collage-driven practice primarily employs ink and watercolour, occasionally she incorporates fragments of everyday life, such as dried flowers, stamps, and other ephemeral traces. Bejani creates fragile, dreamlike figurative compositions that explore the relationship between emotional vulnerability and dignity in the context of profound/visceral/immediate political hardship.

Her art addresses themes of exile, indigeneity and war, which give rise to collective emotional wounds and needs that she attempts to actualise through the evocative power of aesthetic experience. Through her work, Bejani aims to help people process and recognise emotions such as pain, grief, rage, and hope. Guided by the feminist belief that hope is a practice and the decolonial pursuit of reinstating rituals in daily life, she examines how these emotions can and should be intentionally expressed in the world, serving as remedies for despair and fear. Her pieces depict scenes that evoke these intense feelings, aiming to analyse them and to encourage viewers to create space for their own dignifying processes/potential. Bejani's practice investigates how a commitment to softness and radical vulnerability can represent an understated form of strength.

Using semi-translucent Japanese paper, she experiments with revealing, veiling, and sculpting; torn pieces are arranged with precision yet held together by the faintest touch of glue, sometimes appearing on the verge of drifting apart. Delicate yet rugged, her works embody both fragility and resilience.
