Artist statement :
Gabrielle Bejani is a French-born, Lebanese and Palestinian artist currently based in London. Her work sits at the intersection of drawing and painting; her collage-driven practice primarily employs ink and watercolour on Japanese archival paper. She creates fragile, dreamlike compositions, sometimes figurative, sometimes abstract, which explore the emotional ramifications linked to diasporic condition, indigeneity and experience of war. In her painting she aims to materialise these affects, giving form, weight, and credibility to these inner states.
She is interested in working between reality and phantasmagoria. Moving between the testimonial and the speculative, she meddles account of felt experiences with construction of imagined, reparative, and utopic ways of being.
Bejani understands her art as a form of care, offering a space for recognition, processing, and aspiration, as well as re-alignment between inner experience and the external world. Drawing on the idea of artistic practice as ritual, she considers how aesthetic experience can act as a balm and a tonic, opening space for reflection, restoration, and transformation.
Using semi-translucent Japanese paper, she works through processes of revealing, veiling, and layering. Torn fragments are arranged with precision yet held together by the faintest touch of glue, at times appearing on the verge of drifting apart. Delicate yet rugged, her works embody both fragility and resilience.
